In news, Roberto and Heather Atienza (nee Wall – from Lustre) are missionaries in Cebu, Philippines, where Roberto is the director of the Children’s Shelter of Cebu, located in the second largest city of the Philippines. On the afternoon/evening of Nov. 26 (Thanksgiving evening), a very large fire fanned by strong winds off the ocean burned a poor section of the city called Alaska Mambalig. Atienzas met with families on Monday, as some of their workers lived there. As of 9 p.m. Nov. 29, the total number of families affected by the fire were 1,010 with 4,170 individuals and 575 houses. The Atienzas have helped to organize a soup kitchen in the elementary school that is housing 700 families. They write, “God is so good. The Rotary Club is providing funding, the Philippines Navy Reserves are providing manpower (our family and friends will be there too) and we are providing prayer, planning and oversight.” They are cooking at Navy headquarters and bringing the rice/ chicken porridge called “pospas” in two large kalderos (pots). More reservists will be joining them to help, as their assignments permit. Alaska Mambalig is a very economically depressed area that is difficult to get in, with houses on stilts.
