Event Showcases Food Sovereignty At FPCC

Fort Peck Community College Health and Wellness director Lauren Tobias told the Northern Plains Independent
that a Food Sovereignty Day event planned at the Greet the Dawn auditorium Dec. 2 was a success.
Attendance was high for keynote speaker Jill Falcon Mackin with the Buffalo Nations Food Systems Initiative and Montana State University. There were packed breakout sessions on plant and medicine identification, buffalo meat drying, Native harvesting and growing techniques, recipe sharing, a herds and hunts panel, an elders panel and a high school student panel.
Prayers were offered and traditional meals and menu items were served. Screenings were held of the following films: Honoring the Buffalo Treaty at the Fort Peck Tribes, The Buffalo Unity Project, and Gather. Donovan “Beef” Archambault was master of ceremonies.
The event was funded by grant monies from First Nations Development Institute’s “Gather” Food Sovereignty project and the CDC’s “Good Health & Wellness in Indian Country” project and organized by Tobias, Jonny Lee Bearcub Stiffarm, Shelia Spotted Bull, Roxann Smith and Carrie Manning, among others.
