Wolf Point Drops Football Opener Against Bowman


The Wolf Point Wolves faced an uphill battle against a sharp passing Bowman, N.D., team to open the football season on Friday, Aug. 27. The Wolves dropped the home contest by a 45-0 final.
“The team stayed together,” Wolf Point’s first-year head coach Anthony Red Cloud said about positives after the loss. “We have a lot of things that we’re looking forward to.”
Bowman scored 39 of its points during the first half of action.
“The score didn’t reflect the progress we’re making,” Red Cloud said. “We have a long road ahead of us, but we’re making some steps forward.”
Defensive highlights of the contest for the Wolves included the play of linebackers Charlie Page and Michael Bell.
The Bulldogs scored on the game’s first play from scrimmage when a wide receiver screen to Clay Heimer resulted in a 61-yard touchdown.
Bowman’s next touchdown came on a 14-yard pass play from Quaid Lardy to Brody Headley with 8:17 left in the opening quarter. Marc Stuber’s kick put the margin at 13-0.
After a fumble recovery by Gavin Lambourn, the Bulldogs scored on a 21-yard dash by Heimer. An 11-yard run by Riggs Rotenberger put Bowman up 26-0 with 4:56 remaining in the period.
Bowman increased the gap to 33-0 when Heimer made a leaping catch in the end zone with 1:28 left in the quarter.
The Bulldogs’ lone touchdown of the second quarter came on a 39-yard pass completion from Lardy to Carson Massey for a 39-0 advantage with 11:28 left in the half.
Bowman reached the end zone on a run from the one by Bishop Duffield to open the fourth quarter for a 45-0 margin.
The Wolves then put together a nice drive highlighted with runs by Mason Garfield, quarterback Gaige Bushman and Page. A seven- yard gain by Garfield resulted in a first down at the Bowman five, but the Wolves were unable to score.
