Wolf Point Girls Down Poplar In Tourney


With both teams’ seasons on the line, Wolf Point’s girls emerged with a 64-48 District 2B tournament victory over Poplar on Friday, Feb. 26.
The Wolves, who had four players reach double figures, started taking control with the last five points of the first quarter on a hoop by Jaylee Azure, a free throw by Hamyanie Campbell and a basket by Sierra Hamilton for a 14-9 lead.
A hoop by Macey Dionne and two free tosses by Dusti Marottek kept the Indians close at 16-13, but Wolf Point responded with eight of the next 10 points on a steal and layup by Campbell, two short jumpers by Hamilton and a basket by J’Elle Garfield for a 24-15 advantage.
The scoring of Josie Kolstad and a three-point play by Azure helped the Wolves earn a 34-21 half-time lead.
Poplar got off to a good start in the second half when sophomore Morgen Nordwick connected on a three-pointer to pull the Indians to 34-24.
Ahead 35-26, Wolf Point ran off the next nine points on a three-pointer by Campbell along with baskets by Hamilton, Garfield and Azure.
Although Nordwick kept having a hot hand for Poplar, Wolf Point enjoyed a 49-35 lead at the end of the third quarter.
The Wolves opened the fourth quarter with a three-pointer by Azure and a pair of free throws by Garfield to increase their advantage to 54-35.
After Poplar scored on a free throw by Nordwick and a fast-break basket by Allie Azure, the Wolves struck back on four points by Kolstad and a basket by Garfield for a 64-41 margin with 3:12 remaining.
Reaching double figures for the Wolves were Azure with 17, Kolstad with 14, Garfield with 13 and Hamilton with 11. Campbell added nine points.
Nordwick led Poplar with 18 points.
Also scoring were Dionne with six, Azure with five, Marottek with five, Teagan Escarcega with four, Keandra Martell with four, Rikki Relton with four and Catherine Bear with two.
