Wolf Point advanced into the championship match of the District 2B volleyball tournament by nipping Malta, 23-25, 25-22, 25-22, 18-25, 15-12, in Malta on Friday, Oct. 30.

In the deciding set, the Wolves used two kills by Jewel Olson, an ace by Sarah Williamson and a kill by Kayden Sibley to earn a quick 5-0 advantage.

After Malta closed the margin to two points, the Wolves moved ahead 10-5 on two kills by Mikaya Smoker-Dewitt and a tip by Demi Kegley.

Two strong serves by setter Gracie Ferdina put Wolf Point ahead by a 13-6 margin.

Malta, however, didn’t back down. The M’ettes came as close as 13-11 and 14-12 until Wolf Point earned the final point for the victory.

After dropping the first set of the match, the Wolves battled back for a 12-12 deadlock in the second set on the net play of J’Elle Garfield and serving of Sierra Hamilton.

The Wolves then fell behind 16-13, but four straight net winners by Olson put Wolf Point into the lead. The score was even at 18-18 before Malta struck for three straight points.

Wolf Point tied the score on a tip by Hamilton and an ace by Kegley and then gained a 23-21 lead on a kill by Garfield and a serve by Kegley. With the score at 24-22, the Wolves ended the second set on a kill by Garfield.

Down by a 16-12 margin in the third set, the Wolves fought back on net winners by Olson, Ferdina and Hamilton. Another kill by Hamilton pulled the Wolves to 20-18.

The Wolves tied the score at 22-22 on a kill by Smoker- Dewitt. A spike by Sibley put Wolf Point ahead 23-22.

Ahead by a 24-22 margin, the Wolves ended the third set on a block by Olson.

Malta broke away from a 15-14 score in the fourth set to win by a 25-18 margin to force a fifth set.

Olson led the Wolves with 12 kills and 12 blocks.

Ferdina finished with 52 assists. Hailey Nelson accounted for 20 digs.

Malta’s Kylie Lefdahl finished with 10 kills. Erica Smith had six aces and 22 assists.
