National Cancellation Puts Yellow Jackets On Hold

The Wolf Point Yellow Jackets’ practices were halted Monday, May 11, after the American Legion National Organization in Indianapolis, Ind., announced that the American Legion Baseball 2020 season is canceled.

The decision is a reversal of the Legion in April canceling the American Legion World Series and the eight regional tournaments but allowing local Legion play.

In a press release from the American Legion national headquarters, the veterans’ organization cited continuing events resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic and shut down all sponsorship and investment in baseball programs for the 2020 season. Legion teams that play baseball this summer cannot use the American Legion name.

The cancellation came after several Legion practices on Burkie Field.

The Babe Ruth League Yellow Jackets recently received approval to play this summer and were scheduled to begin practice Monday, May 11. That practice was canceled. It was unknown Tuesday, May 12, if Babe Ruth League would cancel as well.

Legion baseball is for youths ages 15-18 and Babe Ruth League is for 12- to 15year-olds.
