Plentywood Beats Culbertson Teams

Both of Culbertson's basketball squads struggled offensively and lost at Plentywood on Friday night. The Cowgirls fell by a 58-33 final and the Cowboys were defeated by a 49-30 margin.

In the girls' game, Culbertson got off to a good start as the scoring of Faith Bowland led the team to a 12-9 lead. Points by Liv Wangerin cut the margin to 12-11 at the end of the opening quarter.

After the Wildcats went ahead on a three-pointer by Ashtyn Curtiss and a hoop by Paityn Curtiss, Culbertson battled back to a 16-16 deadlock on a basket by Bowland and a drive by Makena Hauge.

Plentywood then exploded for 13 of the last 14 points of the half for a 29-17 advantage. Wangerin accounted for five of the points.

The Wildcats ran off the first nine points of the third quarter to increase the margin to 38-17. Wangerin scored four and A. Curtiss hit a three-pointer during the streak. Plentywood led 43-18 at the end of the third quarter.

Top scorers for the Cowgirls were Bowland with 11, Kelsie Williams with 10 and Hauge with 10. Ashtyn Ator added two points.

Leading Plentywood were Wangerin with 14 and A. Curtiss with 11 points. Shayla Fawcett and Emma Brensdal scored seven points each.

After a 7-7 deadlock at the end of the first quarter, the Cowboys lost at Plentywood by a 49-30 final.

Culbertson gained an 11-7 lead on baskets by Colin Avance and Gabe Granada to open the second quarter, but Plentywood responded with the next 11 points. The Wildcats went on to lead 22-15 at the half.

A trio of three-pointers by Tyson Flickinger led Plentywood to a 34-19 advantage in the third quarter.

The Wildcats struck for the last seven points of the third quarter on a hoop by Quinn Abar, a free throw by Jordon Trupe, another three-pointer by Flickinger and a free toss by Chris Hagan for a 41-21 lead after three quarters of play.

Culbertson's top scorers in the game were Payton Hauge and Michael Pederson with seven points each. Rounding out the scoring were Avance with six, Eli Williams with six and Granada with four.

Leading Plentywood were Flickinger with 18, Hagan with 12 and Reese Wirtz with 10.
