Jack Tolan, aged 90, of Great Falls, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2025. Jack was born on Dec. 23, 1934, at the homestead of his parents, Nels and Margaret (Bensch) Tolan, near Poplar, Mont. At 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served aboard the aircraft carrier, USS Oriskany CV-34. He served as aide-de-camp for the admiral of the 7th Fleet on two deployments to the Far East. Ports of call included Hawaii, Japan, China and the Philippines. He returned home after his discharge in 1957. He married his wife of 58 years, Virginia (Kuehne) on March 10, 1957, and moved to Great Falls, Montana. He worked for Falls Tire for a short time before forming Tolan Distributing Inc., with Virginia, as jobber for Chevron USA Inc. He continued to work even up until his death. Jack truly enjoyed his many customers when they came and visited. Jack spent many years gardening while Virginia grew flowers. Together, they were foster parents for seven children. He was very proud of his three children. He rarely missed any music concerts, football games or wrestling matches. He was especially proud to attend all three kids’ college graduations and proud that all three served in the U.S. military. He was a Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader seeing his two sons on to becoming Life Scout and Eagle Scout. He is a lifetime member of the Marine Corps League. He was also a longtime member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. He and Virginia enjoyed dancing, meeting with friends and attending family events throughout the years. They enjoyed traveling together to San Francisco, Acapulco, Seattle, Honolulu and Bermuda, as well as trips across Montana and Alberta. Jack was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia; grandson, Daniel Wimberly; brother, Victor Tolan; and sister, Ann (Russ) Christopherson. He is survived by his children, Desiree Tolan, Derrick Tolan and Darron (Mary-Beth) Tolan, all of Great Falls, Mont.; grandchildren, Matthew Wimberly of Salem, Ill., Stephen Swindle of Great Falls, Isaac Tolan and Emma Tolan, both of Great Falls; Gab Tolan and Garrett Tolan of Brush, Colo.; great-grandchildren, Joslyn Wimberly of Spokane, Wash., and McKenna Wimberly of Great Falls, Mont. There will be a celebration of life for both Jack and Virginia on Saturday, Nov. 15, 2025, at 2 p.m., at Schnider Funeral Home, 1510 13th St. So., Great Falls, Mont. Sharon Faye Red Thunder, 80, of Poplar died Oct. 6, 2025, in Poplar. She was born on May 24, 1945, in Poplar to Jeanette Cloud and Lester (Jim) Youpee Sr. Shewas raised in Brockton and Poplar and was a 1963 graduate of Brockton High School. She married Calvin Red Thunder Sr. on Dec. 12, 1967, in Wolf Point. They lived in Brockton and Poplar eventually made their home in Poplar. She had five children: Sheldon Youpee, Calvin Jr., Denise, Angeline and her grandson Jared Standing, whom she raised as her son. She worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs in the Probate Department for over 20 years and retired in 2003. She also sat on the enrollment committee for several years. She started the Turns Around Pow Wow 18 years ago and was still very active as a committee member until her death. She ran for the Tribal Executive Board in 2003 and served for two years. She loved her community, the people and thought the best way to serve them was to serve on the tribal board. She also sat on the Poplar Community Organization board for over 10 years. She loved life and lived it to the fullest. She enjoyed being with her grandchildren and riding around with family. She loved to travel and went to Las Vegas and many other places. She is survived by her daughter, Angeline; son, Calvin “Chick” Jr.; a grandson she raised, Jared Standing; sisters, Kate Youpee, Millie Runs Through and Jamie Youpee; and numerous grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Calvin Red Thunder Sr.; daughter, Denise Red Thunder; son, Sheldon Youpee; brothers; Joe, Russell ”Gus,” Gary, Lester “Big Son” Jr., Bob Sr. and Tommy; sisters, Dolly Boyd, Linda Red Boy and Delores Red Boy; and infant granddaughter, Tiffany Rae Youpee. Mass of Christian Burial was held Thursday, Oct. 16, at the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Poplar. Interment was at the Poplar City Cemetery. Clayton Stevenson Memorial Chapel of Wolf Point was entrusted with the arrangements.
