Leonard Johann Hustad, 89, of Bainville, Mont., passed away on March 28, 2023, at Roosevelt Nursing Home in Culbertson, Mont., after a full and long life. Born May 12, 1933 in Lustre, Mont., Dad grew up during the Great Depression and World War II. He was the third child of Norwegian immigrant Anton and Alma (Kjensrud) Hustad. He joined older brother Myron and sister Doris, not long after, Russell and Marlon were born. The five siblings filled their simple tar paper shack. Dad’s simple up bringing played a large part of who he would be. He left school after the eighth grade, finding work on the Hustad farm, as a laborer on the Glasgow Air Force base, as well as a delivery driver for a local gas company. On Oct. 20, 1957, Dad married Betty Eschenbacher and together they raised two sons, Don and David, whom Mom brought into their marriage. I was born in 1958 and the family was complete. In 1965, we moved back to Mom’s family farm, north of Bainville, where they raised their family and continued to work the farm together. They truly were a great pair, working side by side, as they milked cows which they delivered to local customers. Dad was a hard worker, a man of many trades and incredibly stubborn. This was a testament to his strong Norwegian heritage. When they moved to Bainville, he found his true passion for farming and ranching. He was known as a “frugal” guy often going to auctions to buy machinery and other things that he might need one day. Growing up during the depression, he used what he had, fixed what was broken and saved “everything.” If you didn’t have the money to pay for it, you simply did without. He never found a used tire he didn’t like. To our recollection, he never once bought a new tire. He taught me to be self-sufficient and even made me fix my own bike tires.

Michelle Carlene RedBoy, 25, of Poplar died Monday, March 20, 2023, at the Billings Clinic in Billings. She was born Sept. 22, 1997, in Wolf Point to Kathy Red Eagle and Charles RedBoy. She grew up in Poplar and attended Poplar Schools until her senior year. She received her Hi-Set degree on Jan. 24, 2019. She met Vincent Longtree in September 2015. Together, they had son Lakota Tex Red-Boy-Longtree, “Kota” as she always called him, on Sept. 5, 2016. She was a proud mom to three boys, Lakota, Michael and Gabriel. She enjoyed working for her Grandma Nancy at Nancy’s Housekeeping, but due to health problems she spent most of her time at home with Vince and their three boys. She enjoyed spending time with family. She was a very loving and kind-hearted person. She was always willing to help with anything she was able to. She was the only who would climb in the attic for her grandmother, go to the basement for her Auntie Glenna or drive for her Auntie Carole. All her aunties thought of her as their own. Whenever there was a birthday party or a family gathering, she was always there, ready to help whenever she was needed. She loved having a good time, laughing, joking and visiting with everyone. Her hobbies included going for rides with her mom or sister, playing machines, listening to music and visiting with family friends.

Mary Red Eagle, 76, of Poplar died March 22, 2023, in Billings. She was born to Richard and Rose (Crow Ghost) Ricker on Dec. 21, 1946. She attended school in Poplar and at Flandreau Indian School in South Dakota. She worked at Spotted Bull Treatment Center for a short time and various other jobs. She met Frank Red Eagle, Sr. and they later got married. She is survived by sons, Tyrone Ricker of Poplar and Ira Ricker of Wolf Point; daughter, Lori Red Eagle of Poplar; and numerous grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Red Eagle Sr.; son, Frank Red Eagle III; brothers, Gene Ricker, Orville Ricker, Virgil Ricker and Donnie Ricker; and sisters, Lois Ann Ferguson,

Saunder Nyles St. Marks, Magazhu Kmunga Hokshina, Rainbow Boy, 24, died Sunday, March 26, 2023. Her was born on March 9, 1999, in Wolf Point to Sonya Smoker and Jamie St. Marks. Not only was he their only son, but he was their pride and joy. He was a big brother to his baby sisters Kaylandra (KJ) Smoker-St. Marks and DeShaya Smoker and a little brother to Amanda St. Marks. He attended and graduated in 2017 from Frazer High School with honors as salutatorian. He was very athletic and played many sports in high school. He excelled in football and basketball. He had many accolades throughout his high school career which included All-State Honorable Mention in Football 2015-16, First Team All-Conference in basketball and football 2015-16 and 201617, voted Football Teammate of the Year for the Wolf Point Wolves 2015-16, First Team All-State in both football & basketball 2016-17, selected to play in the 29th annual Class B All Star game, selected to play in the Senior Classic All Star basketball game and selected for Second Team All Star. He was an All-time career three-point baskets made regardless of classification and was inducted to the Frazer Bearcubs Wall of Fame 2016-17. Family was very important to him and he cherished the fact that he came from a big family. He enjoyed family gatherings especially barbecues and Sunday dinners and loved Thanksgiving and Christmastimes together. Red Lodge – Jeanne Carol Boulds, age 94, of Poplar, Mont., passed away peacefully Sunday, March 12, 2023, in Red Lodge, Mont., surrounded by family and in the care of her daughters. The middle of three children, Jeanne was born Aug. 11, 1928, in Westby, Mont., to Elmer and Esther (Andersen) Bergh. She was delivered at home by her Danish grandmother Kirsten. Born with clubfeet, Jeanne spent time in the Minneapolis Shriners Children’s Hospital having surgeries and wearing casts. Jeanne spent her childhood in Westby, Mont. When she was eleven, her father died. The family then moved to Vancouver, Wash., in the early ‘40s to work in a fruit-canning factory to support WWII efforts. Jeanne also volunteered at the Barnes General Hospital, visiting and helping with the veterans there. The family made their way back to Montana after the war, and Jeanne graduated from Plentywood High School in 1946. She worked at the soda fountain counter at Plentywood Drug and met the love of her life at a dance at the Blue Moon. She wed Army CPL Raymond “Johnny” Boulds on Aug. 17, 1946, and they were married for 58 years until his death. Out of this union, they were blessed with 11 children. The story goes that Dad saw Mom through the window at Plentywood Drug and told his sister Mona that he was going to marry that girl. He was smitten with Jeanne from first sight and adored her for the rest of his life. After Ray’s graduation from pharmacy school in Missoula, the family settled in Poplar, Mont., where they owned and ran Boulds Drugstore together for 56 years with Jeanne as the bookkeeper and President of Boulds Drug, Inc. Jeanne played piano and had a beautiful voice and sang for many weddings, funerals, and special events. She volunteered many years for Chamber events, as an election official, at the American Legion Club, and during Wild West Days. She won trophies for bowling and liked to meet with the Lutheran ladies for cards and coffee. She sewed and canned food from the family garden. She enjoyed road trips, traveling to visit family, and taking vacations. In her later years, she and Dolores would take little road trips to get her hair done, play cards, and have lunch at the café. She enjoyed doing daily crosswords in pen and loved to play Scrabble, winning almost every game. She played and won her last Scrabble game two weeks prior to her death. Even though she was not quite 5’ tall, she was a spitfire and the rock of the family. She never forgot a birthday or an anniversary, and loved all her grandchildren immensely. She cared for her family her whole life and never turned away any of her children in need. She loved her family unconditionally. She is survived by her 11 children: Muriel (Russell) Smith of Texas, Aileen Edwards of Billings, John and Mike of Poplar, Donna (Robert) Ranf of Missoula, Patricia (John) Toavs of Wolf Point, Laurel Boulds-Fisk of Washington, Raymond “Jeff” of Nevada, Robert (Rachel) of Utah; and her caregivers for the last three years, Dolores and Barrie of Red Lodge; 24 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She is also survived by her favorite maltipoo, Lola, who was by her side for 14 years. Her husband, parents and sisters, Mildred and Barbara, preceded her in death. The family would like to thank the staff of Red Lodge Billings Clinic Hospice and the volunteers for the wonderful care and love they gave to our mom at the end of her life. A special thank you to grandkids, Sydney and Ryan, for all the help and care they gave us and Grandma this past year. Jacqueline “Jackie” Ann Weeks (Waciya Winya – “Woman They Depend Upon”), 73, died March 18, 2023. She was born April 11, 1949, to William “Chubby” Weeks, Jr., and Lillian “Lily” DeLong Weeks. She graduated from Wolf Point High School in 1967 and graduated from the University of Montana - Missoula in 1972 with a bachelor of arts degree in sociology and received her master’s degree in community and regional planning from the University of North Dakota in 1982. She worked for the Fort Peck Assiniboine and Sioux Tribes for over 50 years. She began her career with the Fort Peck Tribes as a planning intern with Housing and Urban Development, then became the Planning and Office of Environmental Protection director in 1973. She served as the tribal operations officer of the Fort Peck Tribes from 1992 until her retirement in 2022. Often, she would work on the weekends to make certain projects and grants would be completed and be finished on time. She mentored numerous employees who also sought her advice and counsel. Her dedication to improving her community and tribe was evident in her career and is an inspiration to all. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Josephine Neutgens, Dorothy Balbinot, Gary Farnsworth, William Weeks III and Robert Weeks. She is survived by her sons, James Craft and Seth Miller; twin daughters, Kari and Erin Miller; two adopted grandchildren; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and siblings, Dennis Lambert, John Weeks, David Weeks, Rita Weeks, Tom Weeks and Wayne Weeks. Her funeral was held Friday, March 24, at the Southside School. Cremation followed. Clayton Stevenson Memorial Chapel was entrusted with arrangements.

Mary E Bruhn, 93, of Wolf Point died Sunday, March 19, 2023, in Billings. She was born on Dec. 5, 1929, in Dunseith, N.D., to Alex St Pierre and Virginia (Allery) St Pierre. She married Gilbert J. Bruhn on June 14, 1949, in Dunseith. This union was blessed with four children: Mary Ann Shipstead of Billings, Gilbert J. of Glasgow, Deb White of Billings and Patty Hatvick of Andover, Kansas. During her 68 years in the Wolf Point community, she was employed at Buttrey Foods, Citizens Bank, and Roosevelt County Clerk and Recorder’s Office, from which she retired. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church and the Altar Society. She was a devout Catholic and had a very strong faith. She later volunteered to clean the rectory, do laundry, and cook for Father Steve who is now in Billings and was able to visit with her, pray with her and administer the last rites. She loved to crochet and made all of her children and grandchildren beautiful afghans. She and Gilbert spent many hours camping and fishing at Fort Peck Lake and they eventually bought a cabin at Poverty Ridge. The cabin was a family gathering place for spending time playing cards, fishing, hunting, holidays and special occasions. She was a great friend to many and enjoyed her circle of card playing friends. The “girls” would meet twice a week to play, visit and enjoy lunch. In 2018, she sold the house in Wolf Point and moved to Billings to live with her daughter Deb. She is survived by her four children, 11 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert, in 2011; sisters, Rose, Florence, Christine and Marie; and brother, Walter. A vigil service and Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at Immaculate Conception Church in Wolf Point at a later date. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

Markie Lynn Vondall, 32, of Poplar died March 16, 2023. She was born Aug. 31, 1990. She graduated from Poplar High School in 2010. She was a loving, caring, happy with a bit of a psycho twist kind of person. She loved cruising at times, and her latest hobby was staying at home watching TV or listening to music and visiting with family and friends. She tried college, but she didn’t feel it at that time. She worked a couple jobs — the last one was at the Poplar School kitchen. Soon after, her fight against cancer began. She is survived by her son, Brayden Crowe; mother, Shari Ogle; father, Norman Vondall; sister, Launa Swanson; and brothers, Nikolas, Cameran, Connor Ogle and Tyler Vondall. Funeral services were held Monday, March 27, at the Poplar Cultural Center. Interment was at the Poplar City Cemetery. Clayton Stevenson Memorial Chapel was entrusted with arrangements.

Carolyn Sigg Pilgrim, 92, of Wolf Point died March 18, 2023, at Trinity Hospital. She was born Nov. 29, 1930, in Joliet to Alfred G and Eleanor Horrall Sigg. She attended her school years in Joliet; Los Angeles, Calif.; and her senior year of high school in Hinsdale, where she graduated in 1948. She worked in her early years at the Hinsdale Tribune and at the state welfare office in Helena. She attended Montana State University - Billings from 1950-1960, graduating with a bachelor of science in education. She taught various grades from 1952-1988, in Glasgow, Billings, Forsyth, Terry, Wolf Point, Sunnyside and at Frontier School. She spent many years as a substitute teacher while raising her children. She loved to dance, read, listen to music and study scriptures. She was an avid reader with an extensive collection of books covering a wide variety of subjects. She was very active in her church and dearly loved her “church family.” Over the last 50+ years, her involvement with her church included teaching Sunday school, Relief Society and primary; and also playing the piano for church services, weddings and funerals — which was her favorite calling. She married Joseph E. Pilgrim in April 1963, and died one month shy of their 60th wedding anniversary. They have four children: Kerry, Joe, Andrea and Ronald. They have 15 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Her only living sibling is Jacob Sigg. Her sisters, Barbara Warddrip, Alfreda Drabbs, Julia Slack, Audrey Larson and Martha Neutgens, all preceded her in death. A funeral was held Saturday, March 25, at the Clayton Stevenson Memorial Chapel in Wolf Point. Interment was at the Joliet Cemetery. Clayton Stevenson Memorial Chapel was entrusted with arrangements.
