Millions Approved For Poplar IHS Project

The Fort Peck Tribal Executive Board approved $7.38 million for construction of six residential buildings in Poplar during the full board meeting Oct. 13.

The resolution describes the structures as duplexes, but little additional information was available at press time.

Sources within TEB confirmed that construction crews broke ground at the site last week, which is located near the water tower east of tribal headquarters. The residential structures are intended to support Indian Health Service and Fort Peck Tribal Health operations locally.

Resolutions passed at the Oct. 13 meeting included approval of a $7,382,117.12 construction contract with the Malta- based 21 Construction and the purchase of approximately 360 acres of land for $450,000.

Several new positions within tribal programs were discussed but no details were offered.

Monies for the purchase of the land are expected to come through Tribal Land Buy Back Program accounts.

The resolutions were brought forward via Tribal Health and Natural Resources and passed unanimously, with 10 council members voting in favor of the funding and two members absent. The land for the project was purchased from Gary and Marilyn Zimmerman, based on recent property appraisals.
