Daniels County Library Notes
The Whirlpool of Lebanon by Will Pass is a new literary fiction. This short read begins in Lebanon, Kan. Zebedee Stout is a local farmer, who spends his days checking his cows, riding his horse, Dan, and generally just minds his own business. Until one day a pond suddenly appears in his field.
At the same time, his old horse bucks him off and goes for the water in the new pond. This is highly unexpected, as Dan is old by any measure! But not anymore, Dan is now a foal, and far too small to ride. The cows, who have also partaken of the water, have turned into calves. How can this be happening, in Kansas off all places?
And now what? Would you tell everyone about these special waters? Could you keep it a secret? Or sell it to make money?” Greed definitely plays a part in these choices. What would you do if you were a child again?
The Pirate Queen by Ariel Lawhon is a fantasy historical fiction that begins with Grace O’Malley as the only daughter of a powerful chieftain in Ireland. There were troubled times during this point in history, but Grace was a force to be reckon with! From the time when she was 5 years old, she wanted to be on a ship, headed out to sea. When her father told her of the dangers of her hair being caught in the ropes of the sails, she cut it off so she would be allowed on the boat!
But that was not to be, as she was married off to a man she did not love, Donal O’Flaherty. She does not give up, and continues to fight to preserve her Irish heritage against the English.
This book is told in three narratives, Maiden, Marriage and Matriarch, and will guide you through this tumultuous time in history.
