Although motorcycle ridership skews heavily toward men, women represent a rapidly growing segment of riders. Recent data from the Motorcycle Industry Council indicates approximately 19 to 20 percent of motorcycle owners in the United States are women. This is a significant jump from a few decades ago. The rising numbers are largely driven by Millennial and Gen X women. The mean age for women riders is 39, which is younger than the average age of 48 for men. Motoress, a resource for woman motorcycle enthusiasts, found that women prefer cruisers and scooters as their rides of choice, followed by sport bikes. Fun and recreation, sense of freedom and access to nature are the main reasons women ride.
