The Scobey Spartans earned championship honors at the Richey/ Lambert volleyball tournament held on Saturday, Oct. 3.

The Spartans went undefeated in pool play with victories over Mon-Dak, Alexander, N.D., and Richey/Lambert. In the match against MonDak, Emery Rouse finished with five kills, four aces and eight assists. Chloe Handran scored 10 kills and three aces. Ava Stentoft served five aces and Nikki Rush had nine digs. In the win over Alexander, leading the Spartans were Rouse with 13 kills and nine assists and Handran with 12 kills, 14 assists and five aces. Having 14 digs each were Rush and Stentoft. Against Richey/ Lambert, Rouse finished with 11 kills, 10 assists and four aces. Handran had 14 kills, nine assists and two blocks. Leaders in digs were Rush with nine and Willa Fishell with five.

At the start of tournament play, the Spartans knocked off Savage’s JVs. Handran finished with 13 assists and six digs in the match. Rouse scored 13 kills. Halle Cromwell served four aces and Ainsley Berryhill had two aces. Rush finished with eight digs.

The Spartans then defeated Alexander in the semi-final round. Handran led the attack with 13 kills, seven assists and six digs. Rouse added eight kills, seven assists, 10 digs and two blocks. Leaders in digs were Rush with seven and Stentoft with four.

Scobey edged Savage, 25-21, 20-25, 17-15, in the championship match.

Rouse finished with 20 kills, two blocks and nine digs in the title match. Handran posted 12 kills, 16 assists, nine digs and two aces. Stentoft added seven digs and an ace. Cromwell scored three kills, five digs and two aces. Paige McGillis had four assists. Rush had nine digs and Fishell had six digs.

The first set was deadlocked at 20-20 until Scobey struck for four straight points on two kills by Rouse and an ace by Cromwell.

After Savage scored a point, the Spartans ended the set on a powerful kill by Rouse.

Kills by Cromwell and RousepulledtheSpartans to 21-20 in the second set, but Savage tallied the final four points for a 25-20 win.

A spike and ace by Handran put Scobey ahead by a 13-8 margin in the deciding third set. The Warriors, however, battled back to a 13-13 deadlock.

Savage had two match point chances, but both times Rouse accounted for kills. After a kill by Rouse produced a 15-15 deadlock, Scobey scored the final two points including one on a block by Rouse.

Scobey opened the week with a 25-3, 25-10, 257, conference victory over Frazer.

The Spartans will host Bainville on Thursday, Oct. 8.
