Indians Fight Off Lady Wolves In Four Sets
Poplar and Wolf Point’s volleyball teams battled toe to toe for four sets before the Indians came out on top in Poplar on Thursday, Oct. 1. Poplar earned a 21-25, 25-15, 26-24, 25-19, league victory.
The first set was deadlocked at 8-8 until the hitting of Addy Smith carried the Wolves to a 14-8 advantage.
Poplar was able to battle back to 18-13 on winning hits by Frankie Gourneau and Carsyn Fourbear. Two hard serves by Fourbear pulled the Indians to 21-19.
Wolf Point responded with a spike and ace by Anna Matejovsky for a 2319 lead. Ahead by a 24-21 margin, the Wolves ended the set with a spike by Ma’Kenzie Jackson.
The hard serving of Fourbear highlighted play during the early going of the second set. The sophomore scored four aces to lead the Indians to a 9-1 advantage.
Kills by Sophia Crawford and Gourneau gave Poplar an 11-3 advantage and a kill by Quintana Young put the score at 144.
The Wolves were able to cut the margin to 15-10 on the serving of Butterfly Lindsay. The Wolves came as close as 21-14 on net plays by Jackson and an ace by Smith.
Ahead by a 24-15 margin, the Indians tallied the set’s final point on a tip by Gourneau.
In the third set, the Indians battled to an 11-7 lead on the net play of Young and Gourneau. Wolf Point, however, pulled to 13-12 on kills by Matejovsky and Mckenzie Rodenberg.
Down by a 20-15 margin, Wolf Point closed the margin to 20-18 on a kill by Matejovsky, a block by Lindsay and an ace by McKinlee Paulson.
The net play of Matejovsky and an ace by Maia Kent led the way as Wolf Point pulled even at 23-23.
After each team was guilty of making miscues, Poplar gained a 25-24 lead. Gourneau served an ace to win the set for the Indians.
Aces by Fourbear and Jacey Azure led the way for Poplar to take a 6-3 advantage in the fourth set. A kill by S. Crawford and an ace by Gourneau put Poplar ahead by a 10-4 score.
After a kill by S. Crawford put the Indians ahead 20-12, the Wolves used net winners by Matejovsky and Jackson to cut the gap to 21-16. A kill and tip by Young increased Poplar’s lead to 23-16.
Wolf Point’s Mattie Azure scored a tip, but kills by Daralyn Bullchief and Fourbear led the Indians to the final victory.
