Wolves Rout Roundup To Open Season
After a close first half, the Wolf Point Wolves broke away in the second half for a season-opening 46-12 football victory at Roundup on Friday, Aug. 28.
The only points scored in the first quarter were on a safety when Wolf Point’s Aaryn Hamilton sacked Roundup’s quarterback in the end zone on the Panthers’ opening drive.
After Roundup scored a touchdown with 7:26 remaining in the second quarter, the Wolves responded with a drive into Roundup territory on quality runs by Jesse Reed and Jayden Dominique.
On first down at the 14, Reed broke away for a touchdown to put the Wolves up 8-6 with 2:34 left in the half.
The Wolves struck again near the end of the half. A 43-yard pass play from Tanner MacDonald to Dominique set the Wolves up at the five. On the next play, Reed scored his second touchdown of the evening. Reed, a senior, also battled in for the twopoint conversion for a 16-6 advantage.
Wolf Point started the second half with fireworks when Prestyn Klatt returned the opening kickoff 77 yards for a touchdown. Quarterback MacDonald ran in the conversion for a 24-6 margin.
On the Wolves’ next drive, they drove again into Roundup territory. A nice six-yard keeper run by MacDonald produced a first down at the 29. Mac-Donald then hit Kayden Charette with a touchdown pass with 8:32 left in the quarter. Dominique raced in for the conversion to put the score at 32-6.
After taking over at the 48 due to a short punt, Reed bounced off three tacklers for a first down at the Roundup 42. MacDonald then escaped a potential sack and scrambled 19 yards to the 24. On the next play, MacDonald connected with Dominque for a touchdown. Reed’s conversion run put the score at 40-6 with 4:06 left in the third quarter.
Wolf Point’s final touchdown came on a six-yard smash by Reed with 10:30 remaining in the non-conference game.
The Panthers scored with 1:28 left for the 46-12 final.
Reed led Wolf Point’s rushing attack with 76 yards on 11 carries.
MacDonald added 45 rushing yards and Dominique ran for 36 yards. Dominique had two catches for 64 yards.
MacDonald completed three of five passing attempts for 93 yards.
Defensively, Hamilton finished with five tackles, six assists, a sack and two tackles for loss. Reed had three tackles, seven assists, a sack, a tackle for loss and a fumble recovery.
Other leaders in tackles were Cole Holen with eight, Dominique with six, Charette with five, Wyatt Weyrauch with five and Trenton McCarty with five.
Wolf Point will host Colstrip on Friday, Sept. 4, for homecoming. Colstrip opened the season with a 46-0 loss against Townsend.
