Wolves Open Cross Country Season With Strong Showing

Wolf Point’s cross country team opened its season by grabbing top honors at its own invitational held on Friday, Aug. 28.

Wolf Point’s boys took first place in the team standings with 26 points while Scobey was second with 50 and Culbertson/ Bainville placed third with 67 points.

Freshmen Kolter Berglee and Keyden Beston had standout efforts for the Wolves. Berglee finished third with a time of 19:06.7 while Beston finished fifth at 19:34.1. Terry’s Sidney Murr was the overall winner at 18:37.0 and Circle’s Luke Voss earned second at 18:58.8.

Berglee said he was “really surprised” with his strong showing.

“My goal was trying to get 19:30,” he said. “Now, I’m trying to get under 19 minutes.”

Wolf Point’s Reilly Rees also finished in the top 10 with a time of 19:52.3 for ninth place.

Also placing for Wolf Point’s boys were Andrew Williamson at 20:25.2 for 11th place, Kayeiko Villaluz at 20:48.3 for 14th and Kevin Brock at 27:50.1 for 46th place.

In the girls’ division, Wolf Point’s eighth-grader Caydee Gorder cruised to a first-place showing with a time of 22:33.5.

Gorder said she was surprised because she knew the meet featured tough competition.

With a time of 21:50 last season, she points to beating that time as a goal for the season.

Her older sister Cali didn’t compete because she was playing for the volleyball team at a tournament. Caydee feels that Cali will be proud of her efforts, “but she’ll beat me.”

The top girls’ teams at the meet were Culbertson with 32 points, Scobey with 33 and Plentywood with 56 points.

Wolf Point’s sophomore Layla Headdress earned top 10 honors with a time of 25:46.5 for seventh place.

Shoni Blount took 45th at 39:46.0.
