Spartans Win Opening Tournament
The Scobey Spartans went through the Eastern C Showcase volleyball tournament undefeated, but they needed to account for a couple of comebacks in order to win the tournament held in Sidney on Saturday, Aug. 29.
During pool play, the Spartans knocked off Mon-Dak, 25-16, 25-13, Richey/ Lambert, 25-15, 25-19, and Wibaux, 25-14, 25-16.
The Spartans started bracket play with a 25-18, 25-11, win over Plevna.
In the second set, Scobey jumped out to an 11-0 advantage on the serving of Chloe Handran and powerful net play of Emery Rouse.
Scobey then fought off Froid/Lake by a 25-19, 2521, margin in the semi-final round.
In the first set, the Spartans led by only an 8-7 margin until a kill and ace by Rouse and a great block and kill by Handran produced a five-point advantage.
Ahead by a 14-10 score, Scobey increased the gap to 17-10 on a kill by Handran and a pair of aces by Nikki Rush. The Red Hawks came as close as 21-18, but another kill by Handran helped the Spartans pull away for the win.
In the second set, the Spartans needed to go into comeback mode after falling behind by a 7-0 margin.
Kills by Rouse and Halle Cromwell pulled the Spartans to 9-5. Later, Scobey cut the margin to 14-13 on kills by Handran and a spike by Ava Stentoft.
A tip and another kill by Handran, a 5-10 junior, led the Spartans to a 17-17 deadlock. After the Red Hawks moved back ahead 20-17, Scobey battled back to 20-20.
The Spartans grabbed a 23-20 advantage on a block by Cromwell, a kill by Rouse and an ace by Handran. The match ended when Rouse accounted for a strong kill for a 25-21 victory.
Scobey then edged Ekalaka, 25-23, 25-22, in the championship match.
Down by a 21-17 margin in the first set, the Spartans struck back with a kill and two aces by Rouse. A kill by Handran was good for a 21-21 deadlock.
The serving of Willa Fishell helped the Spartans pull out the 25-23 victory.
In the second set, an ace by Rouse put Scobey ahead 19-17, but Ekalaka gained a 22-20 advantage.
The ace serving of Stentoft led Scobey to a 23-22 lead. The Spartans ended the match with a kill by Handran and a tip by Fishell.
Scobey will host Wolf Point on Thursday, Sept. 3, for its home opener and senior night.
