Robert Nelsen

Robert John “Bob” Nelsen, 81, formerly of Scobey died July 15, 2026, in Missoula.

He was born in Scobey to Uffe and Getta Nelsen on July 13, 1945. He was raised in northeast Montana and graduated from Wolf Point High School in 1963.

He volunteered for the Army in 1965 and served with distinction in Vietnam with the 12th Battalion, 40th Combat Engineers. He was honorably discharged in 1967 at the rank of Sergeant (E-5).

He returned to Scobey and worked as a land surveyor and was married to Mary Steen. That marriage brought three children, Bill, RJ and Jeanne Sue. He and Mary then farmed with her parents, west of Four Buttes.

In 1980, he attended the Vo-Tech in Helena, and then started with the State of Montana Department of Transportation in Billings, where he worked for over 30 years. After his retirement, he spent a lot of time on his favorite things, which included visiting family, coffee with the retirees, old westerns on TV, Dairy Queen stops and following the Griz.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Joyce, Helen, Mary Jane, LaVerna and Jeanne; brother, Allan.

He is survived by his sister, Lois; his children and grandchildren, Austin, Matthew, Sara, Charles and Grace.

A service was held at the Daniels County Cemetery
