Daniels County Library Notes

Cold Fire by Clive Cussler is the 22nd installment in the NUMA Files Series. This story has Kurt Austin and Joe Zavala returning as the main characters, and the readers will not be sorry to see them again! This is fast-paced escapism at its best!

The Americans are testing a new cutting-edge laser in the Arctic Ocean, and the C-17 has hit its target dead on from 400 miles out! It would have been a complete success, well, except the plane has disappeared, along with the crew. With the other superpower wanna-be’s watching, it isn’t long before it becomes a race to see who is first to recover this new tech!

China and Russia are in the lead, and the only American vessel even close, is the NUMA scientifi c research ship, with Kurt and Joe aboard. When they are attacked by the Chinese, they must head to Norway for repairs. And what they find there is very disconcerting – Russian ships, the Chinese attackers, just what have they gotten themselves into this time?

Country People by Daniel Mason is a new historical fiction from a Pulitzer Prize finalist! This story begins with an urban family in California. Miles Krzelewski is a perpetual graduate student, who has started his dissertation 11 times and abandoned it with each attempt! His wife is oered a one-year fellowship in Vermont, being the gifted and renowned scholar that she is! So, with their two children, Wesley and Olive, and the family dog, Giuseppe, they embark on a cross-county trip. On the way, they experience a completely dierent culture. So many flavors of processed foods! Unheard of from the sheltered life they left! Twinkies! Pringles!

The story covers the challenges of teenagers, health issues, and some humor with the pharmacy prescriptions. Wesley experiences night terrors and Olive struggles with making and keeping friends at school, but the family does find a way to become part of the community, and that is all I can

say about that!

Book Club is reading Breakfast with Buddha

by Roland Merullo. Otto and Cecelia grew up on a North Dakota farm. Both of their parents were killed in an automobile accident, and now they must make their way to the farm to settle the estate. Cecelia has a dreadful fear of flying, and insists they drive, from New Jersey.

Otto is a successful editor, while Cecelia tells fortunes. But she backs out at the last minute, and substitutes her guru, Volya Rinpoche, in her stead! She plans on giving her half of the estate to him, which Otto views as reckless. Otto is borderline Protestant, but he questions his beliefs, to himself, anyway.

Well, this road trip will have him questioning everything! In his eort to show the guru the American way of life, it kind of backfires. Otto learns how to see his life from a different perspective. A very enjoyable read! We will meet Aug. 20, at 10 a.m. for discussion.
