Mario Kart Tourney Attracts Good Turnout
About 20 students took part in a Mario Kart gaming tournament last week as the Fort Peck Reservation’s Canku program continues to offer new options.
“There’s a lot of interest in gaming at this time and day,” Bryor Smith, Wolf Point student engagement coordinator, explained why the tournament was offered.
Canku provided pizza and water during the fun day at the Fort Peck Community College Dumont building. Prizes were given to the winners in each division. Mario Kart is a series of kart racing games based on the Mario franchise developed and published by Nintendo.
“We try to provide new opportunities to keep the students busy during the summer,” Smith explained.
A nice variety of options were offered throughout the summer.
The Wolf Point program included an art club and skate jam.
The Poplar program, under the leadership of Molly Redpath, held obstacles courses and a fishing day.
In a partnership with Jessica Weeks, free haircuts will be provided before the start of the school year for K-12 students. Dates include Aug. 11 at Frazer school, Aug. 17 at Brockton school, Aug. 18 at Poplar’s Greet the Dawn and Aug. 20 at her barbershop for Wolf Point students. Times are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Smith said the current five-year grant for the program ends on Sept. 30, 2027. The program provides the summer activities, which support students socially and emotionally.
“We’ve applied for a new grant to keep it going for the next five years,” he said.
