As the high school campaign nears its post-season stretch, Wolf Point’s sprinter Adalynn Smith aims to continue her success in the 400-meter dash. Meet after meet this season, the speedy sophomore has finished first in the race regardless whether she was facing Class B, Class C or Class A competition.

A highlight of this season came last Friday at the large Shriners’ meet in Glendive where Smith crossed the finish line first with a personal best time of 60.2 seconds.

“I was very excited, especially after cutting a few seconds,” Smith said regarding the time.

The sophomore says she will continue to work hard and has her eyes set of the school record of 58.34 seconds set by state champion Jewel Olson.

Smith is currently ranked first in the district and second in the division. The best time in the division belongs to Shelby’s Regan Torgerson at 58.63 seconds.

Smith is hopeful of also qualifying for the Class B state meet in the 100 and the 200 this season.

She is also confident that the girls’ 400-meter relay team can also advance to the state competition to be held in Missoula. She loves running with her teammates, and the relay is ranked fourth in the division.

“It’s fun with all the girls. Just our bond makes it fun,” Smith said. “We haven’t reached our potential yet.”

Advancing to the state meet won’t be anything new for Smith. As an eighth-grader, she qualified in the long jump. That year she was the only female member of Wolf Point’s track program to compete at state. She was able to stay in a hotel room with her parents.

Last season, she raced in the 400-meter dash and short relay at the state meet.

The honor roll student also starts in volleyball, flag football and basketball for the Wolves. Next to track, flag football is her favorite sport.

“There’s not a lot of pressure,” Smith said of flag football. “It’s a fun sport to play.”

Her speed has led her to be a gamebreaker in football. Highlights included a long touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage of the semi-final round contest at the state tournament. “That was pretty fun. I think it was about half of the field,” she added.
