Wolves Upset Glasgow At District Tournament
The Wolf Point Wolves stunned third-seeded Glasgow, 65-51, in the first round of the District 2B boys’ basketball tournament in Malta on Thursday, Feb. 26.
The sixth-seeded Wolves came out red-hot in the opening quarter to earn a 17-7 lead.
A basket by Kayden Charette and a three-pointer by Sean Hamilton got the Wolves off to a 5-0 advantage. After a free throw by Glasgow’s Grady Nielsen, Zandon Calder scored off a rebound for a 7-1 advantage.
After the Scotties pulled to 7-3, the Wolves kept rolling on a three-pointer by Richard Campbell, four points by Calder and three points by Hamilton for a 10-point margin at the end of the quarter.
A steal and layup by Hamilton along with a three-point play by Jett Azure provided a great start for the Wolves in the second quarter to put the score at 22-7.
Glasgow was able to get as close as 10 points when Cash Stulc hit a three-pointer, but two more hoops by Calder and a three-pointer by Campbell put the Wolves ahead 3217 at the half.
The strong inside play of 6-5 junior Calder led Wolf Point to a 40-21 lead in the third quarter.
After Glasgow cut the gap to 43-26, Hamilton nailed another three-pointer for the Wolves.
Glasgow gained momentum with the final six points of the quarter, including four by Nielsen, for a 46-32 margin.
The Scotties rallied in the fourth period as a pair of three-pointers by Wyatt Sugg pulled Glasgow to 50-43. A free throw by Nielsen got Glasgow as close as 50-44 with 4:40 remaining.
Wolf Point responded with a 17-footer by Campbell and a free throw by Azure. Hamilton then fired in a three-pointer to lift the Wolves to a 56-44 lead with 2:57 left.
After Glasgow’s Nielsen scored on a drive, Wolf Point’s Brady Four Bear accounted for five straight points for a comfortable 61-46 advantage with a minute to play.
Wolf Point’s top scorers were Calder with 17, Hamilton with 15 and Campbell with 15 points.
Rounding out the scoring were Azure with seven, Four Bear with five, Charette with four and Andrew Williamson with two points.
