After a close start to the District 2C contest, Brockton’s girls’ basketball team broke away for a 65-42 victory in Culbertson on Thursday, Feb. 5.

Brockton led 10-7 at the end of the opening quarter, but the Cowgirls pulled even, 13-13, on baskets by Emma Berwick, Anna Steppler and Payton Labatte.

The Cowgirls kept the heat on when a free throw by Leandra Perkins cut Brockton’s lead to 18-16, but the Warriors closed the second quarter with seven straight points on a three-point play by Tamryna Bauer, a layup by Azalea Clampitt and a short jumper by Bauer for a 25-16 half-time advantage.

Baskets by Kalia Featherston and Ivy Colvin were highlights for the Cowgirls in the third quarter before Brockton’s Marlene Fish scored four straight points. A steal and drive by Labatte ended the period with the Cowgirls trailing only by a 38-26 margin.

The Warriors used a three-pointer by Marlene Fish along with baskets by Bauer and Madalyn Fish to increase their advantage to 52-33 during fourth-quarter action.

After a basket by Labatte, the Warriors ran off seven straight points including another three-pointer by Marlene Fish for a 59-35 lead with under three minutes left.

Leading Brockton’s attack were Bauer with 23, Marlene Fish with 21 and Azalea Clampitt with 10 points.

Also scoring were Taylor Cummins with five, Claire Clampitt with two, Raykira Runsabove with two and Madalyn Fish with two.

Culbertson’s top scorers were Labatte with nine and Steppler with eight points.

Rounding out the scoring were Ator with six, Perkins with five, Berwick with five, Featherston with two, Ella Anderson with two, Colvin with two, Stella Fox with two and Aeryn Ator with one.
