Brockton Boys Down Fusion Lustre Girls Edge Froid/Lake, 44-41
In a game that wasn’t decided until the final buzzer, Lustre held off Froid/Lake, 44-41, in non-conference girls’ basketball play on Saturday, Jan. 31. The visiting Red Hawks appeared to have the upper- hand when they led 31-28 at the end of the third quarter and increased the margin to 33-28 on a basket by Joelle Davidson early in the final period.
Lustre, however, then struck for the next 10 points on a 15-footer by Lauren Holzrichter, a three-pointer by freshman Samantha Neufeld, two free throws by Kencia Brown and a three-pointer by Sidney Klatt.
The Red Hawks responded with a pair of free throws by eighth-grader Atley Jensen, but the Lions answered with two more free throws by K. Brown and a three-pointer by Holzrichter for a 43-35 advantage with 2:52 to play.
Froid/Lake kept hustling and battling as Jensen accounted for five straight points to pull the Red Hawks to 43-41 with 1:01 left.
After each team failed on scoring chances, K. Brown hit a free throw to put the Lions up, 44-41, with 10 seconds left. The Red Hawks missed on two three-point attempts in the final six seconds.
Top scorers for the Lions were K. Brown with 16 and Neufeld with 13 points. Also scoring were Holzrichter with six, Harlo Reddig with four, Klatt with three and Hannah Brown with two.
Leading the Red Hawks were Jensen with 17 and Laytyn Davidson with 10 points. Rounding out the scoring were J. Davidson with six, Isabelle Nordwick with four and Keira Stentoft with four.
Five straight points by L. Davidson gave the Red Hawks a 13-5 lead to end the first quarter. Another basket by the freshman put the margin at 15-5 early in the second period.
The Lions came back with the next 12 points on six points by K. Brown and three-pointers by Reddig and Neufeld. Lustre held a 20-17 half-time advantage.
Three-pointers by L. Davidson and Stentoft helped Froid/Lake take a 31-28 lead at the end of three quarters of play.
The Brockton Warriors scored at least 20 points in each quarter to beat Richey/ Lambert, 87-64, in boys’ basketball action on Friday, Jan. 30.
Brockton opened the District 2C game by accounting for 23 points in the first quarter for a 23-12 lead. Miles Boxer Jr. and Jarid Fast Horse Jr. each scored seven points in the period.
The Warriors held a 47-35 lead at intermission. Tefton Bear connected on two three-pointers in the second period.
Brockton increased its lead to 67-50 in the third quarter. Josh Firemoon fired in a pair of three-pointers in the quarter.
Leading Brockton’s attack were Fasthorse with 24 and Firemoon with 23 points. Boxer added 12 points.
Also scoring were Bear with eight, Weston Lambert with six, Colter Nygard with six and Codean BigEagle with four.
Top scorers for the Fusion were Curtis Mullin with 20, Sy Carda with 13 and Trace Fulton with 13 points.
In the girls’ game, the Fusion took control in the second half to down Brockton, 74-55.
After Richey/Lambert took a 17-6 lead in the first quarter, Brockton responded with 26 points in the second period for a 34-32 advantage.
The Fusion struck for 19 points in the third quarter for a 51-45 advantage. The Fusion added 23 more points in the fourth period.
Top scorers for the Warriors were Quintana Young with 26 and Tamryn Bauer with 22 points. Madalyn Fish had five and Azalea Clampitt scored two points.
Jolee Klempel scored 31 points for the Fusion. Brynne Hill finished with 25 points.
