Bainville’s girls’ basketball team enjoyed a solid start and fought off Brockton, 43-35, in an exciting District 2C contest on Saturday, Jan. 17.

The Bulldogs broke away from a 2-2 deadlock with six straight points on a 14-footer by Jodi Albus, a short jumper by Lila Butikofer, two free throws by Hailey Berwick and two free tosses by Chandi Johnson.

Berwick connected on a three-pointer to put the margin at 11-4, but Brockton responded with a three-pointer by Tamryn Bauer for an 11-7 game at the end of the period.

After a 15-footer by Bauer pulled the Warriors to 16-13, Bainville ran off the next eight points on a pair of hoops by Butikofer, a basket off a rebound by Addison Hansen and a hoop by Jaylynn Bjorge.

Bainville held a 24-15 halftime lead and continued to control the tempo in the third quarter. A baseline shot by Johnson put the Bulldogs up 32-21 at the end of the third quarter.

A drive by Albus gave Bainville a 38-25 lead with five minutes to play, but Brockton then started to turn the contest around. Four quick points by Bauer closed the gap to 38-29.

Bauer kept going with an inside shot and a drive for a 38-33 game with 2:02 remaining. A free throw by Quintana Young cut the margin to 3834.

The Bulldogs ended Brockton’s streak when Albus hit a 12-footer with 50 seconds remaining.

A free throw by Brockton’s Marlene Fish made the score 40-35, but Berwick tossed in three free throws in the final 19 seconds to put the contest away.

Bainville’s top scorers were Berwick with 13 and Butikofer with 10. Also scoring were Albus with eight, Hansen with six, Johnson with four and Bjorge with two.

Bauer accounted for 21 of Brockton’s points. Young and Fish scored seven points each.

Brockton will host Mon-Dak on Friday and play at Savage on Saturday.
