Poplar’s football squad enjoyed a tremendous start in its homecoming football game against Plentywood but lost by a 56-26 final on Thursday, Oct. 9.

The Indians accounted for the first 20 points of the conference game to excite their hometown fans.

Poplar opened the scoring on a broken play when a snap went over punter Chasen Pribbernow’s head. The sophomore, however, kept calm and started to scramble up the field. The team’s quarterback then passed across the field to Anthony Youngman at about the 35, and Youngman went the distance with 9:01 left in the opening quarter.

After a solid defensive effort forced Plentywood to punt the ball, Youngman returned the kick 57 yards for a touchdown. Pribbernow ran in the two-point conversion for a 14-0 lead with 7:08 remaining in the period.

The Indians got into scoring position again when Houston Eder intercepted a pass and returned the ball to the Plentywood 22. Poplar marched down to the four on a nice pass play from Pribbernow to Eder. From there, Pribbernow scored to put the margin at 20-0 with 4:48 left in the quarter.

The Wildcats struck back with a 55-yard scoring drive capped with a four-yard run by Quincy Riggs. Quarterback Will Shackelford got in for the conversion to cut the gap to 20-8.

Poplar responded by driving as deep as the Plentywood seven before losing the ball on a fumble. Two plays later, the Indians returned the favor when Pribbernow recovered a fumble at the Poplar 31.

After Plentywood accounted for an interception near midfield during the second half, the Wildcats reached the end zone on a 30-yard pass to close the margin to 20-14.

A fourth-down 20-yard pass from Shackelford tied the game, 20-20, with 1:03 remaining in the half.

Plentywood moved ahead with a 65-yard drive to open the third quarter. A 25-yard touchdown keeper by Shackelford and a conversion run by Riggs put the score at 2820.

The running of Donald Iceman IV led the Indians into Plentywood territory, but the threat ended on a fumble.

Plentywood was able to increase their lead to 34-20 on a 17-yard run by Shackelford with 1:52 left in the third quarter. Plentywood’s Tryan French then intercepted a pass and raced 65 yards for a touchdown to put the margin at 42-20 to end the third quarter.

The Indians opened the fourth period on a positive note when Pribbernow broke away on a scramble for a first down at the Plentywood nine. The quarterback then ran in for a touchdown with 10:33 remaining for a 42-26 margin.

The Wildcats, however, accounted for the final 14 points

of the contest.
