Lady Wolves Win Divisional Flag Football Championship

The Wolf Point Wolves captured the Northern Division championship for girls’ flag football on Friday, Sept. 26.
After falling to Poplar on Friday afternoon, the Wolves bounced back to score a 28-0 victory over Harlem in the three-team tournament played in Poplar.
Scoring touchdowns against Harlem were Maci Four Star-Sibley, Anna Matejovsky, Ma’Kenzie Jackson and Harper Weeks.
Wolf Point then edged Poplar, 7-6, in the title contest. Both squads will advance to the state tournament in Hamilton.
Matejovsky scored both the touchdown and the conversion for the Wolves in the victory.
Coach Cody Larson said H. Weeks played a huge game defensively for Wolf Point.
The Poplar Indians qualified for the state tournament with a hard-fought 13-0 victory over Wolf Point in a defensive battle on Friday afternoon.
Thanks to a long run by Blake Follette on the game’s opening play, the Indians accounted for a scoring threat early. Wolf Point’s defense then stopped the Indians on solid plays by Adalyn Smith and Teagan Williams. On fourth down, Maci Four Star-Sibley defended a pass to end Poplar’s drive.
The first quarter finished in a scoreless deadlock, but Four Star-Sibley reversed fields for a nice gain inside Poplar territory. The Wolves, however, couldn’t get any farther than the 31.
Pass completions to Braelyn Nordwick highlighted an offensive drive by the Indians, but Poplar was forced to punt late in the half. Wolf Point’s final possession of the second quarter ended on an interception by Saydee Archambault.
After a tackle for loss by Kali Colgan forced the Wolves to punt early in the third quarter, the Indians gained possession at the Wolf Point 16. The running of Follette and Nordwick led Poplar to the one. On fourth down, Follette scored with 3:54 left in the period. Frankie Gourneau passed to Nordwick for the conversion to put the Indians ahead 7-0.
With two offensive standouts injured, the Wolves struggled to move the football until Smith broke loose for a couple of long runs. Poplar then stopped the Wolves on a fourth-down play with under eight minutes to play.
The Indians added a touchdown on a 15-yard throw from Gourneau to Paityn Kirn with 1:02 remaining.
