Wolf Point’s football team got behind early and lost at defending state champion Malta, 46-14, on Friday, Sept. 19.

The Mustangs jumped out to a 19-0 lead in the first quarter. Malta reached the end zone on a five-yard run by quarterback Kazner Oxarart, a three-run dash by Rylee Brusse and a 42-yard interception return. The Wolves used their powerful running game featuring Jesse Reed and Kasey Reed to drive deep into Malta territory. After K. Reed picked up a first down at the 10, the Wolves got as deep as the two but were unable to reach the end zone.

Malta added a touchdown on a 36-yard reception by Dawson Hammond to increase the margin to 25-0 with 9:15 remaining in the half.

A 66-yard pass play from Oxarart to Hammond put the Mustangs up 31-0 with 6:22 left in the second period.

The Wolves got on the scoreboard when junior Jayden Dominique intercepted a tipped pass and raced 46 yards for a touchdown.

Malta’s final touchdown of the half came on a three-yard pass to Hammond to put the margin at 39-6 with 32 seconds left in the half.

The Mustangs scored on their first possession of the third quarter on a short run by Chase Albus to increase the gap to 46-6.

Wolf Point reached the end zone when Dominique took a pitch-out and went 83 yards for a touchdown. K. Reed ran in the conversion for the 4614 final.

Dominique led the Wolves with 86 yards rushing. J. Reed ran for 39 yards.

Leaders in total tackles for Wolf Point were K. Reed with nine, J. Reed with eight, Roper Flaten with six, Chasan Welch with five, Sean Hamilton with five and DaShaun Jackson with five, Malta’s Hammond caught five passes for 162 yards.

The Wolves will host Conrad for homecoming on Friday, Sept. 26.
