Wolves Down Shelby To Improve Record To 3-0

Wolf Point’s rushing attack and defense dominated action as the Wolves stopped Shelby, 42-12, in non-conference football action on Friday, Sept. 12.

The Wolves, 3-0 for the season, accounted for the home game’s first break when senior linebacker Sean Hamilton recovered a fumble at the Shelby 19. After an eight-yard run by Sam Boysun picked up a first down at the seven, Jesse Reed sprinted in for the touchdown with 4:30 left in the opening quarter.

After defensive plays by Boysun and Hamilton forced the Coyotes to punt the ball, a short kick gave Wolf Point possession at the Shelby 26. Runs by J. Reed and Jayden Dominique produced a first down at the six. From there, quarterback Kasey Reed ran into the end zone with 1:07 left in the period. K. Reed also got in for the conversion for a 14-0 advantage.

Wolf Point put together a 38-yard scoring drive early in the second period. After runs by the Reed brothers advanced the ball to the 14, Boysun fought for 11 yards to the three.

On first down at the three, J. Reed fought in with 8:29 left in the half. K. Reed passed to Hamilton for the two-point conversion and a 22-0 advantage.

The Coyotes, however, gained some momentum when Reese Shandorf intercepted a pass and raced 82 yards for a touchdown to cut the margin to 22-6 with 3:59 remaining in the half.

The Wolves responded with a 76-yard, nine play scoring drive. After gaining a first down at the Shelby 44, J. Reed broke loose for a 20-yard gain to the 24. The Wolves went on to score from the one on a sneak by K. Reed with 14 seconds left in the half. K. Reed ran in the conversion for a 30-6 advantage.

A 47-yard dash by J. Reed put the Wolves in scoring position at the Shelby 11 to open the third quarter. On second down from the nine, K. Reed raced into the end zone for a 36-6 lead at the 9:07 mark.

Wolf Point’s final touchdown came on a six-yard run by K. Reed to put the margin at 42-6 at the end of the third quarter.

Shelby added a touchdown on an 11-yard dash by Bryson Deeble with 9:12 remaining in the contest.

The running of Tanner Macdonald helped the Wolves run out the clock for the victory.

J. Reed, a junior, led Wolf Point’s offensive attack with 2326yards rushing. K. Reed, a senior, added 68 yards.

Leaders in tackles were Zadon Calder and Hamilton with five each. Having three tackles each were Boysun, Jesse Foote and J. Reed.

The Wolves will play at defending state champion Malta on Friday, Sept. 19.
