City Waits On Park Service Regarding Triangle Park

City of Wolf Point officials are still waiting for a reply from the National Park Service whether it’s possible for the city to move forward with plans for selling the Triangle Park property.

“We’re having to wait for them,” Wolf Point Mayor Chris Dschaak said.

If approval is granted, Dschaak said officials still aren’t sure if the selling process would require a vote of city residents.

The Wolf Point City Council voted on a 6-2 margin last January to pursue the sale of Triangle Park. Carrie Manning and Craig Rodenberg were the only two council members who voted against the motion.

At that meeting, Dschaak noted the city has the right to refuse any and all bids. The city is only agreeing to authorize the sale and not agreeing to a certain price or a specified buyer.

In October 2024, Town Pump’s officials stated a proposal that includes paying the city $20,000 for the property. The company will use the land to expand its building and to add diesel islands and gas pumps. Town Pump officials said the assessed property value of the park land is $10,383.

During a meeting in May, Attorney Montana Wilson stated the council has not authorized a sale. He said his investigation into the legal parameters of a sale is currently stalled while he waits to hear back about authorization from the National Park Service. Funds received through a potential sale must be earmarked to update or improve a different park or create a new park.

City council member Dean Mahlum has expressed his interest of changing the perception and increase the amount of activity at Nellie’s Park. He got the idea while attending a Re-imagining Rural program meeting earlier this year held in Wolf Point. Mahlum noted the park’s great landscape that includes beautiful pine trees. The park already features three picnic tables, and Mahlum pictures adding other covered tables including some situated between the pine trees. Other ideas include a walking trail around the outside edge of the park.
