FourStar Announces Campaign For House Seat

Lance FourStar of Wolf Point has announced that he will be a Democratic candidate for the House District 31 election in 2026.

Rep. Frank Smith defeated FourStar in the 2024 primary by a 311-199 margin. Smith has announced that he will not seek re-election.

FourStar has served as the director for the Montana Indian Caucus during the last two legislative sessions.

“I have gained valuable insight into the legislative process and absolutely need to send a signal that I am serious about serving to be the next representative for House District 31,” FourStar said of why he has announced his candidacy. “I am qualified for the position because I’ve seen what it takes to work in both chambers of the state legislature, legislative services, with constituents, groups, tribes and the governor in successfully passing legislation I have identified with the Indian Caucus in the past two sessions.”

FourStar says that when he has a goal, he dedicates his time and energy to accomplish the goal. He lists key issues as immigration, property taxes and health care.

“Looking forward into the future, many critical aspects of these issues will affect legislation introduced, receiving public comment, debated in committees and in both chambers. Of course, all constituents contribute to what dynamics occur during this process and what is best for all Montanans is the outcome legislators hope for before the governor signs or vetoes any bill,” FourStar said.

He added that tribal concerns supersede everything for most Montana American Indian Caucus members. He said he’s not afraid to work across the aisle for the best solutions. “I look forward to serving and it will be an honor I cherish and will carry with all of the weight it carries to represent such a great population I have deep roots in,” FourStar said.
