Escarcega Wins Girls’ Wrestling Scholarship
Angelina “Nina” Escarcega, Poplar, and Tirza Two Teeth, Ronan, are recipients of this year’s Selah Natural Medicine Girls Wrestling Scholarship. Each of the winners will receive a $1,000 scholarship. This is the third straight year Dr. Chip Halverson, ND, a physician in Kalispell, and Portland, Ore., has offered the scholarship. The interest in the scholarship has grown and so it was decided to increase the number and amount of scholarship available for these outstanding young women.
According to the press release, “while you do not need to be a state champion or be on the honor roll to apply, you do need to demonstrate character, integrity, determination and a willingness to help others.” The winners this year all exemplify the purpose of the scholarship and have been role models in helping grow girls wrestling in Montana and women’s college wrestling at the national level. Their accomplishments, both in service to their community and school coupled with their strong academic and athletic accomplishments are too numerous to mention. However it is noteworthy that both recipients were three-time Montana State High School champions, four-time Montana finalists and nationally ranked while in high school. Additionally they will both be continuing their wrestling careers at the collegiate level this fall.
“All the recipients impressed the committee and demonstrated that there is more to life than just winning matches, what you do for others and the stance you take to support your peers is even more important,” said Halverson.
Additionally Halverson said, “We would like to grow the scholarship in the future with a continuing scholarship for current Montana women wrestling at the college level and add to the enthusiasm for more women’s college programs in Montana. Please contact Selah Natural Medicine at selahnaturalmedicine. com if you are interested in helping grow Montana high school and college wrestling.
