Title VI Approves Budget For School Year
The budget for next school year was approved by Wolf Point’s Title VI parent committee during a meeting on Monday, April 28.
Federal projects director Naomi Erickson explained that the new budget amount is smaller because of a decrease of students. The budget was $168,000 for 20242025, and is $145,737 for next school year.
After much discussion, the parents’ group voted unanimously to put $69,448 for home/school coordinators and $69,243 for a Native American studies teacher. In addition, $7,046 is for various indirect costs.
Wolf Point School Superintendent David Perkins said a possibility is hiring a school resource officer instead of a third home/school coordinator. He explained the budget can’t handle paying home/ school coordinators, but it’s possible to have a grant help fund a school resource officer.
Parents explained that they would like to receive more information regarding what the Native American studies teacher is covering.
Committee chair Imogene Lilley wants to make sure the funding is being spent wisely. She hopes the teacher is covering past, present and future information regarding Native Americans.
“You’re not going to gain by cutting it, you’re going to lose,” Perkins said of the position.
Lilley said she just wants to know what information is being taught.
Perkins said he will invite the teacher to attend a future meeting.
Title VI grants are provided to the Wolf Point School District to support in developing elementary and secondary school programs that serve Indian studies to meet the unique educational, cultural and language needs. Wolf Point Schools’ administrators assess the needs of students and programs to determine the areas of assistance that would best enable students to achieve state standards.
