The Bainville Bulldogs posted several volleyball victories as they tied for fifth place at the Scobey Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 14.

After opening the tournament with a victory over Wibaux, the Bulldogs dropped a tough match against Scobey by a 25-17, 16-25, final.

The Bulldogs looked very sharp in the first set against Scobey as the net play of Hailey Berwick and Miah Pippenger produced a 14-5 advantage. Ahead by a 14-9 margin, Bainville struck for the next four points on a spike by Pippenger, a tip by Berwick and two aces by Elsie Wilson. With the score at 23-17, the Bulldogs finished the first set with the last two points.

Bainville bounced back from the close defeat against Scobey to down Ekalaka by a 23-25, 25-17, margin.

The second set was deadlocked at 13-13 until Bainville scored on an ace by Wilson and a block by Lila Butikofer. Kills by Berwick increased the gap to 22-16.

The Bulldogs scored on an ace by Butikofer and a kill by Berwick down the stretch for a 25-17 victory.

Bainville then downed Culbertson, 25-10, 25-23, to end pool play with a 3-1 record. The Bulldogs took second in their pool.

In bracket play, the Bulldogs lost against Plentywood by a 26-24, 21-25, 9-15 margin.

The net play of Addison Hansen helped the Bulldogs gain a 21-19 lead in the first set against Plentywood. A spike by Berwick put Bainville up 24-22, but the Wildcats tallied the next two points.

Bainville came away with the 26-24 win on a set-ending ace by Wilson.

The Bulldogs trailed 19-12 in the second set but fought back to 19-15 on the serving of Wilson and a tip by Butikofer. Hansen accounted for a spike to keep Bainville close at 2319, but Plentywood took a 2521 win.

In the third set, Bainville led early before falling behind. A kill by Bainville’s Chandi Johnson tied the score at 8-8. The Wildcats, however, accounted for seven of the final eight points.

The Bulldogs will host Froid/Lake on Thursday, Sept. 19.
