Fosland Files For District Judge Position
Area attorney Ben Fosland filed as a candidate last week for the 15th Judicial District Judge position. Judge David Cybulski of Plentywood has held the position since 1994 and has indicated he may be retiring and has yet to file for the office.
Since 2012, Fosland has operated a private practice in Scobey focusing on real estate, estate planning and probate. He also accepted the position of city attorney for Scobey that year. He spends the biggest share of his time working out of Plentywood, where he has been Sheridan County Attorney since being elected in 2015.
Fosland grew up in Scobey, graduated with honors from the University of Montana in Missoula and was accepted to Gonzaga School of Law from which he graduated cum laude in 2011. Before moving back to Scobey in 2012 to purchase his grandfather’s law practice, he clerked for Hon. David Gratton, chief judge of the Idaho Court of Appeals. Fosland serves as vice president of the Northeast Montana Bar Association, is on the board of the Montana County Attorneys Association and the board for Great Northern Development Corp. Additionally, Fosland serves on the Attorney General’s Law Enforcement Advisory Council.
He married Kara Tweten of the north Nashua area in 2015. They have two boys, ages 5 and 2. The couple built and operate a new micro brewery and taproom, Pleasant Prairie Brewing, in Scobey. It opened in 2022.
Fosland said, “In what little free time I have, I enjoy reading, playing guitar, hiking and hunting.”
Janet Christoffersen, former Roosevelt County Attorney and Richland County Attorney, has also filed for the non-partisan position.
The 15th Judicial District serves Daniels, Sheridan and Roosevelt counties.
