Lustre Girls Upset Scobey, 41-40

 

Lustre Christian’s girls’ basketball squad scored an impressive 41-40 win over Scobey during the regular-season finale on Saturday, Feb. 10.

After a 21-21 deadlock at the half, Scobey appeared ready to take control as baskets by Kaytie Aanstad and a three-pointer by Kennadi Cromwell put the Spartans ahead 28-23.

The Lions, however, displayed their determination with the next 10 points on two jumpers by Alexa Reddig, a basket by Kencia Brown, a putback by Lauryn Holzrichter and a 12-footer by Lauren Fast for a 33-28 lead.

Scobey struck for the last five points of the period for a 33-33 game.

The scoring of Kayla Carney and Cromwell led Scobey to a 40-35 advantage midway into the fourth quarter.

Lustre fought back when K. Brown hit a free throw and then scored off a long pass from L. Holzrichter with 1:46 remaining.

A steal and incredible shot by K. Brown pulled the Lions even at 40-40 with 51 seconds to play.

Another steal by K. Brown gave the Lions back possession with 25 seconds to play. The Lions went ahead when Reddig hit a free throw with five seconds remaining. After missing the second shot, Reddig came away with her own rebound to end the contest.

Reddig and K. Brown each finished with 13 points. Aubri Holzrichter finished with eight points. Also scoring were Grace Brown with three, Fast with two and L. Holzrichter with two.

The Lions will face Frazer at noon Wednesday, Feb. 14, in the first round of the District 3C tournament in Glasgow. Other first-round games are Scobey facing Nashua at 3 p.m. and Circle playing Dodson at 6 p.m. North Country receives a bye.

The championship game is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Saturday. The top four teams advance to the divisional tournament.
