Culbertson’s girls’ basketball squad enjoyed a solid start, but the Cowgirls lost to Richey/Lambert, 47-40, at home on Thursday, Jan. 18.

The Cowgirls jumped out to a 17-6 advantage in the first quarter. A three-point shot by Destiny Thompson and a three-point play by Mariana Burciaga got the Cowgirls off to a 6-2 start.

Ivy Colvin then scored off a great pass from Leandra Perkins for an 8-2 advantage.

After Brie Mullin and Jolee Klempel helped the Fusion cut the gap to 10-6, Burciaga scored four straight points. Thompson connected on a three-pointer for a 17-6 advantage at the end of the opening quarter.

Culbertson started the second quarter in fine fashion as Ayden Ator fired in a three-pointer for a 20-6 margin.

The Fusion, however, fought back with the game’s next eight points. After Culbertson’s Burciaga hit a three-pointer, the Fusion tallied the last six points of the half on four points by Mullin and a layup by ShaeLyn Williams to close Culbertson’s lead to 23-20.

Richey/Lambert moved ahead on an inside shot by Williams and a three-pointer by Keira Rains to open the third quarter.

The Cowgirls stayed close on a drive by Colvin and a free throw by Thompson, but the Fusion went on to grab a 33-27 advantage at the end of the quarter on the scoring of Mullin and Klempel.

After Richey/Lambert gained a 39-29 lead, the Cowgirls’ full-court press led them on a 6-0 run with four points by Thompson and a drive by Burciaga.

Richey/Lambert took control with the next six points. Thompson scored five points in the final 2:41, but the Fusion earned the league victory.

Culbertson’s top scorers were Thompson with 16 and Burciaga with 12 points.

Also scoring were Colvin with nine and Ator with three points.

Leading the Fusion were Klempel with 14, Mullin with 14 and Rains with 11 points.
