The Froid/Lake Red Hawks are experiencing a rather slow start to their boys’ basketball season, but there’s a very good reason for it.

The Red Hawks advanced to the state championship six-man football game so they were concentrating on football while most of the state was heading into the gym for the first days of basketball practice.

Froid/Lake coach Chase White said he feels the football experience will help the student athletes this winter.

“I think anytime you’re playing in the state championship game, it’s a good thing,” White said. “I think the competitiveness will carry over to the basketball season.”

Returning starters for the Red Hawks are seniors Mason Dethman and Nate Stentoft. Dethman is a multi-year All-State selection. Stentoft earned second team All-Conference honors last season.

“They’ve played a lot of games, are good leaders and competitors,” White said.

Other players with varsity experience include junior Joseph Robertson, senor Landen Kelm and senior Daniel Forizs.

White said he is excited about how many players can rotate in and out of the court this season.

A challenge for the squad will be its overall inexperience at the varsity basketball level.

The team will also deal with not being very tall. After Dethman at 6-5, the next tallest players are in the 5-11 range.

“We’re all pretty scrappy and will use that to our advantage,” White said. The coach feels the pre-season favorites in District 2C include Plentywood and Savage.

“Our whole district will be competitive,” White said. Strong opponents in the division will include Lustre Christian and Scobey. The Red Hawks will face both teams at the Scobey Invitational on Dec. 8-9.

“That will be a good measuring stick for us,” White said.
