Poplar Girls’ Basketball Team Shoots To Contend in District 2B

With nine girls returning who saw quality playing time last season, the Poplar Indians are expecting a solid campaign this year.

Top players back for the Indians include senior Kessee Erickson, senior Rikki Belton, junior Mattie Fallsdown, junior EmmaRae Martell, junior Kyra Storm, junior Bailey Dupree, sophomore Saydee Archambault, sophomore Cammie Martell and sophomore Braelyn Nordwick. Falls Down was a second team All-Conference selection last season.

“Bosh” Gourneau is returning to the coaching ranks this season to lead the Indians. His assistant coaches are Les Bighorn and Sunshine Vicente.

“I have high expectations,” Gourneau said for the squad. “I want to hit the ground running.”

He appreciates the athletic ability on Poplar’s squad. The Indians have a turnout of 32 girls.

“I don’t see this as a rebuilding year,” the coach said. “Hopefully, we can make a good run” Poplar will open its season at the Native American Classic in Browning on Dec. 1-2. The Indians’ first home game is against Culbertson on Dec. 5.

“We will take one day at a time,” Gourneau said.
