Froid/Lake Advances To Divisional


With a divisional berth on the line, Froid/Lake earned a straight set victory over Culbertson at the District 1C volleyball tournament in Plentywood on Saturday morning.
The Red Hawks scored a 25-17, 25-23, 25-23 win over Culbertson.
The Red Hawks trailed by a 12-9 margin in the first set, but kills by Isabelle Nordwick and Mara Salvevold along with aces by Brooklynn Nordwick put Froid/Lake into the lead.
A spike by Salvevold and an ace by B. Nordwick led the way to a 20-12 lead. Kills by I. Nordwick increased the gap to 22-13. Culbertson’s Destiny Thompson connected on kills to pull the Cowgirls to 24-17, but Froid/Lake ended the set on a kill by Jaeleigh Davidson.
Net winners by Jazzmin Fugere and a back-row kill by Thompson kept Culbertson close at 15-12 in the second game, but consecutive aces by B. Nordwick put the margin at 18-12.
The strong hitting of Thompson highlighted a surge by the Cowgirls as they closed the gap to 18-17. Kills by Ivy Colvin and Mariana Burciaga along with an ace by Colvin cut the margin to 22--21. After a kill by Fugere tied the second set at 23-23, the Red Hawks responded with the final two points including a kill by Salvevold.
The serving of B. Nordwick led the Red Hawks to a 6-0 start in the third set. An ace by Davidson and a kill by Salvevold kept the Red Hawks ahead by a 16-11 margin. The serving and standout net play by Thompson brought Culbertson back as close as 19-18, but an ace by Davidson put the margin at three points.
Culbertson fought back on kills by Fugere and an ace by Burciaga for a 23-23 deadlock, but a kill by Salvevold helped Froid/Lake end the match at 25-23.
Froid/Lake battled Scobey well but came up short by a 20-25, 14-25, 25-23, 25-22, 5-15 margin in the third-place match on Saturday afternoon.
After dropping the first two sets, Froid/Lake took a 21-20 lead in the third set on an ace by Davidson. Scobey took a 22-21 advantage, but the Red Hawks responded with a kill by Lilly Johnson. Davidson accounted for a back-row kill to tie the score at 23-23. The Red Hawks won the third set on two aces by B. Nordwick.
In the fourth set, the Red Hawks trailed 17-16 but bounced back with two aces by Davidson and a kill by Salvevold. Scobey tied the score at 22-22 on a kill by Camrie Holum, but Froid/ Lake struck for the final three points on two kills by Salvevold and a block by I. Nordwick.
The Spartans jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the fifth set and went on to win by a 15-5 final.
North Country defeated Plentywood in the district title match. North County, Plentywood, Scobey and Froid/Lake will represent District 1C during the Eastern C divisional tournament starting in Sidney on Thursday, Nov. 2.
