The Wolf Point School Board approved hirings and purchases during a special board meeting on Thursday, Aug. 31.

Trustees approved by a 6-0 margin the hiring of Angela Swenson as junior high/high school teacher, Avery White as Southside paraprofessional, Erin Ricker as noninstructional paraprofessional at the junior high/high school, Eileen Poserio as after school tutor and Jimwel Gutierrez as after school tutor.

Jed Loucks was hired as junior high assistant football coach by a 5-0 margin. Board chair Bif Loucks abstained from voting.

Purchases included $76,605 for new curriculum for literature. Also approved was $6,920 for a media Indian education digital library. Other purchases were $6,743 for Microsoft education and server licenses, $7,275 for a copier and service agreement and $7,793 for Chromebooks and carts at Southside.

Trustees approved the request to spend $11,925 for additional costs to the wood shop roof repair.

Superintendent David Perkins said additional strategic planning sessions are needed by the trustees.

Dates set for the three-hour planning sessions were Oct. 4, Oct. 23 and Oct. 25.

Perkins discussed challenges with the H-1B VISA requirements that allow foreign workers to teach in the area. Perkins said the school district could lose three to five teachers in the next year unless if something changes.

“Some of the people trying to come here are having fits,” Perkins said.

The next board meeting is scheduled for Sept. 11.
