Cowgirls Improve During Tourney


The Culbertson Cowgirls advanced as far as the semi-final round during the Culbertson Invitational held on Saturday, Aug. 26.
Savage defeated Scobey in the championship match of the eight-team volleyball tournament.
Culbertson placed third in its pool with a victory over Lustre and losses against Savage and Scobey. Froid/Lake took second in its pool with victories over Nashua and Culbertson’s JVs and a loss against Bainville.
In the elimination tournament, the Cowgirls edged Froid/Lake by a 21-25, 25-13, 15-4, final.
Culbertson held a 20-19 lead in the first set, but Froid/ Lake grabbed the advantage at 22-20 on a kill by Mara Salvevold.
The Red Hawks went on to win by a 25-21 final. Brooklyn Nordwick served an ace for the last point of the set.
The powerful net play of Destiny Thompson and serving of Ivy Colvin led Culbertson to a 12-7 advantage in the second set.
Kills by Thompson increased Culbertson’s advantage to 23-11. With the score at 24-13, Thompson ended the second set with a kill.
Culbertson jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the third set as Jazzmin Fugere served a pair of aces.
A kill by Thompson and an ace by Colvin put the margin at 8-1.
Froid/Lake fought back on a spike by Salvevold and an ace by Isabelle Nordwick, but Culbertson took a 14-4 lead on the strong serving of Leandra Perkins.
Thompson accounted for a kill to finish the match.
The Cowgirls then played well but fell against Savage by a 19-25, 21-25 final.
A block and ace by Thompson pulled Culbertson to 16-13 in the first set. The Cowgirls tied the score at 16-16 on kills by Fugere and Thompson.
The match was even at 1919 until Savage struck for the last six points of the set.
Savage held a 21-15 lead in the second set, but the Cowgirls battled back as a spike by Mariana Burciaga and an ace by Perkins highlighted play to make the score 2319. Savage ended the match at 25-21 on a tip by Karley McPherson.
The Cowgirls will play at Frazer on Thursday, Aug. 31, and at Scobey on Saturday, Sept. 2.
