Featuring one of the top runners in the state, Wolf Point’s cross-country team started pre-season practice on Friday, Aug. 11.

Peyton Summers, a senior, earned All-State honors by placing 12th at last year’s Class B state competition.

“He’s hoping to win it this year,” coach Stacey Summers said. “Peyton has been working hard this summer. He’s been doing 10 miles or more a day.”

Also returning for the Wolves is senior Trent Hamilton. He placed 170th at last year’s state meet.

Coach Summers noted that Hamilton took five minutes off of his time during last season’s meets.

Also on the squad at the season’s first practice were freshmen Ezekial Gourneau and Reilly Rees. Both have some running experience.

Coach Summers noted that it’s a challenge for freshmen to increase the distance of their meet runs from 1.5 miles to 3 miles.

“They need to stay focused and get it done,” she said.

Because five runners are needed for a team score, the Wolves look to add at least one more runner to the program.

Coach Summers said that some eighth-grade boys might be interested in competing at the varsity level.

She also wishes some girls would come out for the sport. She’s hoping that more runners are added once the school year begins.

Cole Baker is the program’s assistant coach.

The Wolves will open their season with their home meet Friday, Aug. 25.
