Wolf Point’s Jewel

One of the fastest female sprinters in the history of Wolf Point High School has hit yet another gear at the collegiate level.

This past spring, Olson established a new North Star conference with a time of 57.01 seconds in the 400-meter dash.

Her previous best time for Dickinson State University was 58.34 seconds in the race.

“I didn’t expect to run that at all,” Olson, who just completed her sophomore year, said.

She feels reasons for the good time included more speed work in practice and being able to run on Dickinson’s home track.

Olson was also part of Dickinson’s 400-meter relay team that ran to a second-place finish at the conference meet with a time of 48.92 seconds.

Another highlight was finishing in first place for the 800-meter run at 2.22.64, even though she doesn’t feel comfortable competing in the longer race.

“I’m still trying to figure out how to run it, but I’m definitely learning,” she said.

She was glad that the Blue Hawks won the conference women’s track championship.

At the NAIA national meet held in Marion, Ind., Olson took 23rd in the 400. She said there were some amazing athletes there including one young woman who ran the 400 in 53 seconds.

Olson’s goals include running the 400 in 56 seconds and qualifying for finals at the national meet.

Olson, who holds Wolf Point High School records for both the 200 and 400, is also enjoying great success in the classroom. She had a 4.0 grade point average this past spring and carries a 3.8 grade point average overall. She is majoring in pre-med.

She earned an award in a writing competition regarding her biology lab report.

She is pleased to have former Wolf Point athletes as teammates. Tori Nygard qualified for the national meet in the hammer throw. Kaholo Toves is solid in in the 200 and Nick Page competes in the 800.

Wolf Point Class of 2023 member Katelyn MacDonald is joining the program for the javelin. In addition, J’Elle Garfield and Gaige Bushman will compete in other sports for the Blue Hawks. Poplar’s Jazmyn Carrywater is heading to the school to run in the cross-country program.

Olson came to Dickinson after winning state titles in both the 200 and 400 as a senior.

“I like it because it’s a small school, but the academics are still challenging,” Olson said of Dickinson.
