Boys’ Teams Head To Divisional Tournament

The Wolf Point Wolves will have their eyes set at capturing one of the two state berths during the Northern B divisional basketball tournament in Shelby starting Thursday, March 2.

Wolf Point will face Shelby at 8 p.m. on Thursday in firstround action. Shelby placed fourth at the District 1B tournament. Shelby opened the tournament by defeating Conrad, 74-36, but then lost to Fairfield by a 59-45 final. Shelby bounced back with a 63-45 win over Choteau before falling to Rocky Boy, 56-50.

“They have some decent size and can shoot it pretty well from three,” Wolf Point Coach Cole Hanks said. “They play good, physical defense.”

The state tournament is scheduled for March 9-11 in Great Falls.

“I think our goal is to make it to State so we have to get to that last game on Saturday night,” Hanks said. “At the beginning of the season, one of our goals was to win divisionals so we are looking to achieve that.”

Other first-round contests on Thursday feature District 1B champion Fairfield facing Glasgow at 1 p.m., Rocky Boy meeting Malta at 2:30 p.m. and Cut Bank playing Poplar at 6:30 p.m. The championship game is scheduled for 8 p.m. on Saturday, March 4.

Fairfield defeated Cut Bank, 80-43, in the District 1B title game. The Eagles’ losses this season have come against Belt, 44-41, and Havre, 69-61.
