Members of the Nakoda Dakota Oyate Youth Council attended the 30th annual Fort Peck Native Pride Youth Conference in Billings Aug. 15-19. Students from Frazer, Wolf Point, Poplar and Brockton made the trip.

The curriculum for the conference was founded by Clayton Small and Ernie Big Horn 30 years ago, according to NDO advisor Carrie Manning.

“Strategic planning for the grant was done with the youths’ assistance,” Manning said. “This year, the youth were able to learn about the horse in our culture and also the horse used for therapy.”

Guest speakers included Crystal Payne-Redgrave and Walter Runs Above Jr.

“[They] spoke and shared their knowledge about the horse nation,” said Manning.

The youth were able to attend the Yellowstone Boys and Girls Ranch equine therapy unit during their trip. “The instructor showed the youth how the horses are in tune with your spirits and inner feelings,” Manning said.
