The community came together in a large way as about 250-300 individuals, including a great turnout of youngsters, showed up for the Fort Peck Youth Summit held at the Jeff Ament Skate Park on Thursday, June 16.

Prairie Bighorn-Blount, executive director of the American Indigenous Business Leaders, said she was very pleased with the attendance for the afternoon’s celebration.

“I didn’t know what to expect,” Bighorn-Blount, one of the event’s organizers, said.

The day included welcoming N7 Fund founder Sam McCracken back home to the Fort Peck Reservation. The Chante program helped fund the activities.

“We need more activities like this to help our youth,” Wolf Point city council member Lance Fourstar said. “I’m glad to see Chante put this together.”

Regarding McCracken, Fourstar noted, “It’s great for him to be back. It’s showing great role modeling.”

Tribal Executive Board member Shannon Martell provided a greeting and prayer.

TEB board members Bruce “Cubby” Damon, Bryce Kirk and Lawrence Hamilton Jr. were busy cooking the hamburgers and hot dogs as part of a free lunch for attendees.

“It’s a good turnout of kids,“ Hamilton said. “We need to keep the kids busy with activities. It’s all about the kids.”

Tarryn Lilley was the winner of the skate boarding contest. For taking first place, he received a pair of Nike SB shoes.

Lilley said he began skate boarding when he was 15, then he retired but now has returned to the activity.

“I come out here every day,” Lilley said. “It’s my freedom.”

The afternoon also featured lacrosse games and a teepee raising contest.
