Culbertson Loses First-Round Contest


After a promising start, the Culbertson Cowgirls fell to Scobey, 31-26, in the first round of the Eastern C divisional tournament in Sidney on Thursday, March 3.
A 12-footer by Alicyn Ator and a free throw by Destiny Thompson put Culbertson ahead 7-4 at the end of the opening quarter.
The Cowgirls were able to increase the margin to 13-6 midway into the second period on a drive by Megan Granbois and the scoring of Perla Burciaga.
A 17-footer by Makena Hauge ended the half with the Cowgirls ahead 15-9.
Consecutive baskets by Thompson and Hauge put Culbertson in the lead by a 19-11 margin early in the third quarter.
A baseline shot by Granbois kept Culbertson ahead at 21-13, but Scobey struck for the final nine points of the period to grab a 22-21 advantage. Cammie Holum tallied the last four points of the quarter.
The Cowgirls regained the lead on a steal and layup by Hauge, but a hoop by Holum and a three-pointer by Daisy Hersel gave Scobey a 27-23 advantage.
A free throw by Hauge cut the gap to 27-24 with 2:16 left, but Scobey’s Karys Lamb then accounted for a threepoint play. Hauge connected on a pullup jumper to pull Culbertson to 30-26 with 42 seconds left, but the Cowgirls were unable to score again.
Leading the Cowgirls was Hauge with 11 points. Also scoring were Granbois with six, Burciaga with four, Thompson with three and Alicyn Ator with two.
Granbois grabbed nine rebounds and had seven steals.
Top scorers for Scobey were Whitley Maher with nine and Holum with eight points.
