Shelby Downs Poplar During Loser-out Action
Poplar’s boys’ basketball squad put up a good challenge but fell to Shelby, 66-57, in loser-out action at the divisional tournament in Glasgow on Saturday, Feb. 26.
After falling behind 8-0, the Indians closed the gap to 10-6 on three-pointers by Geordy Medicine Cloud.
Five points by Allen Russell pulled the Indians to 16-11, but Shelby held an 18-13 advantage at the end of the opening quarter.
The Coyotes then scored the first five points of the second period, including a three-pointer by Radon Richman, for a 10-pont lead. Shelby gained a 26-15 half-time advantage.
The scoring of Dennis Red Eagle led the Indians back to 33-24 during the third quarter. A three-pointer by Medicine Cloud cut the gap to 33-27.
A free throw by Russell, two free tosses by Delray Lilley and a basket off a rebound by Red Eagle got Poplar as close as 36-32 with 2:14 left in the period.
A three-point play by 6-9 senior Rhett Reynolds increased the margin to 41-32 to end the third quarter.
The Coyotes then accounted for eight of the first 10 points of the fourth quarter.
A layup by Medicine Cloud after a steal by Lilley pulled the Indians as close as 54-45 with 2:19 remaining, but Poplar couldn’t get any closer until a three-pointer by Malcom Yellowhammer cut the gap to 62-54 with only 13 seconds left.
Poplar’s top scorers were Medicine Cloud with 20, Russell with 12, Red Eagle with 10 and Lilley with eight points.
Leading Shelby were Reynolds with 23 and Kyle McDermott with 16 points.
