After an extremely competitive first half of action, Wolf Point’s boys’ basketball team managed to gain breathing room in the third quarter en route to a 52-41 league victory over Poplar on Friday, Jan. 21.

Ahead by only a 23-19 halftime margin and 23-21 early in the third quarter, the Wolves delighted the home crowd fans by hitting the next seven points on a three-pointer by Corey Martell and two drives by Kelby Bauer for a ninepoint lead. Jaxon Azure connected on a three-pointer to put the Wolves up 33-23 with 3:47 remaining in the third period.

Baskets by Dennis Red Eagle and Delrae Lilley pulled the Indians to 35-27 at the end of the quarter.

After Lilley canned a 17-footer midway into the fourth quarter, the Wolves responded with Kraven Silk hitting a three-pointer and Martell scoring for a 45-33 lead with 3:26 left. With the margin at 45-35, the Wolves took control when Martell, Juliun Benson and Bauer connected for baskets to increase the gap to 51-35 with only 2:21 remaining.

Leading the Wolves were Bauer with 28 and Martell with 13 points. Also scoring were Benson with five, Silk with three and Azure with three.

Reaching double figures for the Indians were Red Eagle with 14 and Joe Bear with 13 points.

Rounding out the scoring were Lilley with six, Allen Russell with four, Geordy Medicine Cloud with two and Malcom Yellow Hammer with one.

Wolf Point’s Bauer hit four three-pointers to lead the Wolves to a 12-1 advantage during the game’s first three minutes. The Indians, behind the scoring of Bear and a tough zone defense, battled back to 12-10. A three-pointer by Benson put Wolf Point up 15-10 at the end of the quarter.

A three-pointer by Bear closed the margin to 19- 18 midway into the second quarter. The Wolves accounted for the last four points of the half on baskets by Martell and Bauer for a 23-19 advantage.
